I don't even know how to answer the your "selfish" charge. I doubt that 90% of the affiliates made enough from Amazon to pay their web hosting costs. The internet gold mine just isn't there.
it's not a "charge", just an observation that Amazon affiliates aren't the Constitutional Defense League -- they are motivated by business reasons; and some of them do make a substantial amount; some have (foolishly, imo) made affiliate sales a pillar of their long-term business plan (e.g. theonlinephotographer.com)
