well that's a nice model of US "democracy" ...
That's what "democracy" is all about. Real democracy isn't pretty. It
can be very ugly. Don't ever confuse civility with democracy, you'll
find yourself wondering where the mob came from. You can have either or
both, or neither.
but seriously, the explanation such a legislator would make is that
they've helped encourage people to buy locally, blunting the effect of
internet sales on "main street"; there are plenty of counterarguments,
but i think that's what they'd say
I doubt it's the taxes that are the problem for Amazon, it's the record
keeping. Taxes just get added on to the price, they don't pay them the
consumer pays them. Amazon doesn't give too figs about how much taxes
the consumer pays.
i think Amazon mostly doesn't like the fact that taxes will make its
prices less competitive
Actually I think Amazon would would welcome a nation wide sales tax, as
opposed to different reporting requirements for every state. Sure
they'd prefer no sales tax for themselves and sales tax for everyone
else, but hell that's just rational behavior, either way. In the end
they would still have an advantage, just not as big as it is currently.
Just like B&H photo has an advantage over most any local competitor.
