At some level, this is true but the Mac OS X Finder application reads
and displays the contents of the file for you in this instance. Steve
has not explicitly called a file system function to open the file. The
Finder keeps aware of where you are as you move around in the file
system and pre-loads file previews and content through the operating
system's background utilities (Spotlight and other content
indexing/browsing routines). The Finder uses these same means to
provide the "cover flow" previews in that are a built-in part of its
Mac OS X "Leopard" implementation.
Hey I don't know all that stuff mate but what I do know is that it's
shit-hot :-)
The problem is what engine is it using to display the image, the OS may
be rock solid, but the display engine could have problems. I installed
a viewer that would allow certain propriatory files to generate
thumbnails in Win2K which worked quite well, on most files. However
there was one type of image file, (I don't remember which), that would
cause the display engine to hang. While scroling through the thumbnales
when it would reach one of those files the UI would lock up solid
requiring Windows explorer to be killed and re started. I had the same
problem with Raw Therapy, but more annoying, it would pre-load previews
from whole directories, /unless/ that directory contained PEF generated
by a K20d at which time the entire application would crash. Opening
and pre-loading files can be cool, but it can lead to unforseen
problems. The UI problem was a pain in the ass to debug, Raw Therapy
problem was easy to discover, but I don't think I'll ever quite trust
that software again.
