I thought we were discussing reversed "normal" lenses. While the A 50mm
f2.0 isn't expensive to buy used, and is probably the "worst" Pentax
normal lens, It's a 50mm which as a class are the best corrected
lenses in any manufacturers line. Using it reversed on a short telephoto
will get you closer than any close focusing lens and the quality will be
surprisingly good. Sure the A*50mm isn't considered great, but for the
purposes we were discussing, it's more than good enough.

Cheapness isn't the only criteria, as you find once you start shooting
macro. Working distance from your subject, depth of field, field of
view, degree of magnification& convenience in positioning are all big
factors in getting more shots with less toil. A close-focusing lens on
a telephoto zoom can have a ton of benefits. I decided to try the
older Canon 240 and 450 models which are highly regarded and cheaper
since fewer people know to look for them. First one arrived in the
mail today.

That's only cheaper if yo have a da 40, on the other hand a used A 50mm
f2.0 can be had for less than the price of a new set of Kenko automatic
extension tubes, (a lot less in fact).

another (cheaper) option is a reverse ring. Stack a DA 40 reversed on
a DA70 or something else.

I'm quite tempted to get a raynox dcr-250 to use with my DA40 on
walkabout.
I do have macro lenses, but they're quite a bit bigger than a raynox,
plus
that means changing lenses and risking dust on the sensor.
I've seen some good work done with the raynox, but it looks like I'd need
to
get a 43-49mm filter adapter to work with most of my small primes.
Is it a fun toy? A great deal? A total waste of money? All of the above?
