I used to look down my nose at these "close-up filters" and "accessory lenses" until I got John Shaw's excellent book "Close-Ups on Nature" and then doing more research. There are some superb optical achromat lenses that you can get, but they are not the cheap-O +1, +2, +3 close-up filters you are probably thinking of.
