Californian you can recommend?).

Whoops! Missed it by a week and a half, but the SCMWA passport days are a great opportunity to explore the local product:

A lot of the smaller wineries are not open to the public except on passport days. There are also some interesting photo opportunities to be found among the local wineries.

I'm afraid that I haven't been keeping up lately, but I used to really like Salamandre. Ahlgren did some amazing stuff, but Dexter Ahlgren had a stroke, and his daughter took over, and I'm not sure if the winery is still a going concern.

If you like Zinfandel check out Rosenblum cellars in Alameda. Their open houses are really quite the event.

Ravenswood makes some good stuff. Their motto is "No wimpy wines". I used to love their Icon, a rhone style red back when it was about $20/ bottle, similar to Le Cigare Volante from Bonny Doon.

For an inexpensive wine, I used to really like Rabbit Ridge Allure.

And no discussion of California wine is complete without at least mentioning Randall Grahm, of Bonny Doon Vineyards. My favorite of his wine names is "A critique of pure Reisling".

His writing might be described as a cross between James Joyce and Hunter S. Thompson, but that would besmirch his creativity.
