I played with my K7 and its pop-up flash on Saturday.  Even the K7 pop-up flash 
nails exposures better than the 540 on my K10D ever did.  I took a photo of a 
shiny stainless-steel oven and the picture came out bright and shiny!  Well, as 
shiny as it could be because the stove needs cleaning.... but the point is that 
it didn't turn out BLACK like it otherwise would have with older gear.

Maybe you just need a new camera.  :-)
