Subject: Re: OT: Kids are Dying in Cars
Here in Florida we get a couple of these every year it seems. One
recent case involved a child left in a van at a day-care center.
Someone "forgot" to take the child out of the child seat.
I, for one, would vote that it be something for the auto industry to
adopt on their own. It shouldn't cost a lot of money. But, Ken's
thinking is probably the way it really is in the industry.
So how much is it worth ?
This has been the logic used by NHTSA - they set a value per human life and
then multiply that by some number that they say is the most likely
occurrence and then compare that to an implementation cost that they assign.
In my experience the cost as assigned by NHTSA is far under the actual cost
to the customer.

Most of my writing is, well, frivolous. Not this time. Kids are dying in
cars at an unprecedented rate. As unbelievable as it sounds, those deaths
are often caused by a simple memory lapse. The Times asked me to look
into it. The article appears in tomorrow's paper, and it's up on the web
now.
Our own Ken Waller served as a very valuable resource, and he's quoted in
the article. You'll find it here:
