the mechanics of their boxes and Dos/Windows users were forced to.

that stereotype was mostly generated by Apple marketing -- playing to people's insecurities about whatever computer they were using

i don't know that it was ever really well-founded

but from my perspective almost no one shows much interest in how the computers they use work, regardless of the brand, and largely uncorrelated with intelligence
