You could do it that way, but it's much more work than you need to go through. Next time you want to edit an old photo... click on the question-mark in the corner of the thumbnail and it will ask you where you want it to look for the location of that file now. Point it to the right folder (you might need to click on the actual file - can't remember for sure) on that external drive, tell it you'd like it to find other missing files that may be nearby, and you're good to go.
