My PC has a SD reader in it. Like most built-in readers it's

i'd be interested to hear how fast it is in practice

the MacBook Pro SD reader is pretty fast; Apple says it can do 30 MBps

i did a casual test using on my system, a 2009 13" MacBook Pro with a lot of other apps running; i copied a 1.75 GB folder from a heavily-used 2yr old Transcend SDHC class 6 8GB card; brand new, this card may have been capable of 20 MB/sec

using the SD slot on the computer: 112 seconds (15.7 MB/sec)

using a PNY "150x SDHC" reader: 130 seconds (13.5 MB/sec)

using the USB cable to connect to my K200d: 193 seconds (9.1 MB/sec)

in practice, this is not a huge difference though, because i usually do other things while copying; the biggest value of the SD card slot is convenience
