I had an email conversation with the owner of DigiSol, a company that
makes exclusively cardreaders, and he said that an external reader is
always the better solution if oyu have the space because there are no
EMP regulations crippling performance or requiring the use of
expensive shielding or both.
i'm not an RF engineer, but i was under the impression external devices
generally cause worse EM interference
i looked at Digisol's site, and see that it claims its readers do 32
MB/sec, in other words very similar to the claimed performance of
Apple's built-in reader; then i looked for a benchmark and found the
Digisol reader topping out at just over 19 MB/sec read speed for SDHC;
interestingly, Memory Stick got the best numbers in this reader, about
33 MB/sec

the site is hard to navigate, but it looks like a JMicron XpressCard
unit did the best with SDHC, at about 23 MB/sec
