A Lot of people simply put "the item is no longer for sale"

Subject: OT: Canceling my EBay auction (advice sought)

Over the weekend, I posted my first EBay auction. It's a highly sought-after
piece of professional audio recording gear. I could have sold it at a good
price with a Buy It Now, but I decided to keep the ad up a week as a
learning experience.

Well, a local buyer saw the ad and made me a sweet offer if I'd cancel the
ad. After reading the EBay rules, I saw that I can cancel the ad by
canceling all bids and posting an explanation. Since I'll be out of work all
February and here was money in the hand with no long-distance risks, cons,
or misunderstandings, my wife said "Do it!"

I just did it. We made the sale at a nearby shopping center.

Now I must break a lot of hopeful hearts and look like a heel by killng the
auction four days early. I don't want to lie; I want to be perfectly
straightforward about why I ended the auction. Can someone give me advice on
what to write, and how? Should I explain my financial situation, grovel, and
apologize? Or just write something terse, like, "sold the unit to a local
high bidder"?

And will my name forever be mud? I don't think people can post feedback
unless they're the buyer, right?
