I've played around with The Gimp off and on over the years.  It's a
worthwhile project which will eventually develop into a good alternative
to PS Elements and maybe even Photoshop.  But it isn't there yet.

The biggest problems to be are lack of adjustment layers, lack of
support for PS actions, lack of 16 bit support and an apparent inability
to convert to a different profile on saving an image (I might be wrong
about that, but I can't find a way to do it).

And then there's that interface.....

I think your old version of Elements would be preferable.  I worked with
Elements 1 for several years.  There are tricks that can be implemented
to make Elements run many Photoshop actions and to support advanced
features like layer masks and curves.
