Is the exposure, perhaps, the result of being taken from a background shadow 
or...? To avoid the dreaded "clipping", I often lock in a quick meter reading 
taken from something slightly lighter than the main subject. When shooting 
wildlife, however, one seldom has the chance to fiddle with various exposures. 
It's something that must be anticipated and be a part of the preset.
I keep a -1/2 preset. I've heard of some doing such to speed up the shutter, 
thereby, reducing noise grain. Seems any effect would be largely/wholly 
imaginary.
