You need an editor that allows you to adjust either highlights or shadows 
without affecting the total image. A handy tool for adjusting the lighting in 
other parts of the image is by dragging the mid-range contrast slider.
Aside from the histogram, do you set up your LCD to flash to indicate both over 
and under exposure?
