PPI settings have no effect on web images. None at all. The pixel
dimensions are all that matter. I go with around 800-900 pixels wide
for horizontal images and around 600-700 pixels tall for vertical
shots.

PNG files will generally be much larger with no discernable
improvement in image quality. JPEGs also have the advantage of
supporting embedded ICC profiles.

Go with JPEG format for photographic images.
