A farthing was worth pretty close to half a cent when they stopped being legal currency (1960 or thereabouts).
There used to be things you could buy for a farthing - in those days my main interest was in the individual sweets available in the village sweet shop (conveniently situated at the end of the lane that led from the school to the high street). There were even some varieties priced at two or three for a farthing. I've probably got the odd farthing lying around in a drawer.
