The evening sun is crosslight, coming from behind the building, so it's hitting the side of the building and the left side of the guys face. But everyone in the foreground is in deep shadow. Not unlike those "under the L shots" Christine was attempting. Going tight on her subject there with a long lens would have the same effect as it would have produced here: a people shot without the environment that makes it interesting. Paul
