Well, going in to "Live View" the remote does nothing that I can see
on the K-7. But I haven't exhausted that approach yet. Stay tuned.
The way it works on the K-7 is you set up the camera (in the @ timer
menu, top button on the 4-way) for a "Remote Mirror Lock Up" (all the
way to the right, down, then right one - or use the thumbwheels) at
which time the camera waits for a remote signal. When you give it one,
it stops down the diaphragm, and flips the mirror up. You then have
about 30 secs during which time the next time you push the remote
button, the photo is exposed, the mirror comes down. I pushed the AF
and Green buttons before testing, but turning the camera off then on,
focusing at infinity, then taking the same shot again, it was not in
focus, but the exposure was right on. Go figure..
As has been said, the manual is vague about this, though a careful 3rd
time reading it I get that the camera must be focused manually before
using this mode. So maybe even pressing AF before the shot won't work.
Oh, and they recommend setting AF to phase differential before using
MLU Remote. Because it's faster. And better in low light levels (and
demanding situations). But they warn it is less accurate than the
contrast method.
I've set the camera back to my normal methodology, I hope. I should
head out and try this method in the field sometime though, so I am
less unsure about what to do.

I'm using an old IR remote off one of Pentax's old film compact
cameras
- works well and cheap too!
My problem with IR remotes is that they don't trigger the mirror-up,
self timer option that the wired remotes do (at least they don't
on the
*istDS and K200D). And using an IR remote from behind the camera
requires a bit of flexibility that I'm sadly lacking these days :-)>
When I'm doing landscape photography using a tripod, I like to use
the
mirror-up option to minimize camera shake. The fact that the K-x
and
K-r don't have a wired remote port (when the earlier low-end cameras
did) is very disappointing.
I use the remote control F with my K10D with the 3 second MLU remote
option and it works fine. Buying a stiffer tripod helped, too =)
OK, it seems I was wrong - not for the first time and definitely not
for
the last.
The IR remote *does* trigger a mirror-up option on the K200D.
In my defence the manual is ambiguous. In describing the self timer
operation, the manual specifically mentions that the mirror goes up
with
the 2 sec delay option, but when discussing the 3 sec delay with the
IR
remote it doesn't mention mirror-up. So I assumed (wrongly - I just
tested it) that the mirror only went up when the shutter opened.
I really do need to study the manual more closely....
