You can't achieve a perfect balance. Remember how the Bush administration was bashed for "not connecting the dots" prior to 9/11? Connecting those dots requires a great deal of close scrutiny. So far no one has impinged on my freedom to live the way I choose, so I'm content.

But the story in the Memphis paper and as picked up by the Times is about Withers. The fact that he was an informant is newsworthy. Hoover's misdeeds have been covered extensively. They're history now, not news. Still important, but not news.
