Here's a quote you should ponder.
"When he legislature decides what is bought and sold, the first thing
bought and sold is the legislature."
It's a good quote, but it not only isn't applicable, your legislature has
been being bought and sold by self interest for so long it's now considered
SOP to be bribed if you are a Senator (though I am sure there is a nicer
word being used).
The problem wasn't with the legislature deciding what should be bought and
sold, the problem was with the legislature not putting rules in place
regarding how things may be bought and sold, and you can be pretty certain
that the reason for this is because the legislature was bought.
This is why you guys have a fucked up economy and countries with fairly
strong banking regulations (such as Canada) aren't in the same shitter with
the USA.
