Kid photos, unless they are your kids, have required model releases from the
parents or guardians for a long time. Pets kind of fall under the heading
of property in many places. In lots of places, you need to get permision
from owners before you sell, or publish, pictures of their pets or houses.
Public buildings are usually OK but there may be some exceptions. There are
some national parks where, if you use a tripod, you need to buy a license to
use it to make photos inside the park. The thought being that, if you are
using a tripod, you are a pro and the government wants a share of your
potential income from the photos, up front, before you are allowed to use
the tripod to take them. It used to be about $20 for the permit. May cost
more now. These are the biggest reasons I don't submit my pictures to the
PUG. They are 95% mug shots (weddings, portraits, stuff like that) and
putting them on the web is publishing. There are tons of people who don't
want to run across their pictures on the web, and I can't afford the ensuing
law suits. So, better safe, than sorry.

Subject: Model release forms

After Bill posted about the inflatable ringflash, I went and had a look
around the Turek Camera website.
I had to have a nosey at the photo contest, of course. I even read the
rules of entry. The very last one surprised me -

I quote:
9) For categories including people or pets, a model release is required.
Where the photo taken is of a minor a parent or guardian's signature is
required. With pets, the pet's owner's signature is required. Model release
forms will be available at Turek Camera Shop.

You're all going to tell me that this is perfectly normal, but I swear I've
never come across anything like this before. Is it a North American Thing
or is it everywhere?

Wendy
(who also mis-read "pet's signature required")
