I think you would benefit from choosing a focus point in situations where DOF is minimal. Repositioning after locking in focus slightly alters the distance from lens to subject. It can be a significant difference when shooting a tight portrait, for example, with a lens of moderate focal length -- say a 40 mm lens. When shooting moving kids I usually go for the center spot on top or in the second row. That comes closer to the eye level than does the center spot. Changing focal points is quick and easy once you get used to it. My thumb now does it automatically, and my brain nows that if I'm on the top spot and want to go to the left spot in the second row from the bottom, it's three clicks down and one left.

This is an interesting line of conversation for me, as I NEVER use anything BUT the centre focus point. I am in such a habit of positioning that point on whatever I want in focus and half-pressing to lock it, then moving the camera to recompose the shot, I find it clumsy and time-consuming to play with focus points. Especially, when I am shooting fast moving kids, it is so intuitive to me now, to do as I just mentioned and I just don't even
think about it anymore.

Would I benefit, do you think from changing this habit and selecting
individual focus points? Is there a way of doing this quickly, and without
lots of button pressing?

Ok, Found the specs at DPReview. I take it SAFOX IX+ is a crippled whore
that can run a little faster?
Note to Pentax: Put a new AF into your cameras and stop hobbling them
with an 11 point system.

I think I'll wait to hear from someone who has actually TRIED the K5
autofocus before passing judgement. I always pick my own focus points, and 11 are adequate. All I want is better lock on. The K7 is a lot better than the K20. I suspect this camera will be another significant improvement. But
like I said, I'm not going to pass judgement, based on the DP whiners.

Obviously we don't have the same wants in a camera, 11 points in the
current emulation is at best adequate sometimes, and at worst is inadequate much of the time. I always pick my AF point as well, and sometimes, there
is even a focus point where I want it to be.
The major exception to this is studio portraiture (which you don't do a
lot of), where the end point isn't ever in the right spot and the next tier
in is too close to the center to be of any use.
I wouldn't mind the 11 point AF if they'd move the points around a bit to
make them useful, but I suspect that losing the left hand point and moving it to the right side and moving both end sensors off center halfway between the location of the mid point sensors would cause the people who think the present system is adequate to whine like a 747 coming in for a landing.

While I don't do a lot of studio portraiture, I do some, and I frequently shoot people. I admit I sometimes have to reposition from the top or second tier outside point before clicking the shutter. I guess I've learned to live with that inconvenience and don't even think about it. But a few more points in that area wold be helpful. However, I still want the fast, low- light lock
on the most. That would make ti a winner for me.
