Problem solved. Instructions say to copy the upgrade to the root directory. The file manager showed a folder on the directory on the card. I assumed it was the root directory. No! It's a folder *in* the root directory. When I moved the upgrade to the root directory, the upgrade went through in less than a minute. Checking firmware now shows 2.02. Thanks for questioning me on the basics.
