checked a pinout diagram and you're right in that those are actually
power and gnd. there is a second gnd contact on the other side of the
power pin as well - I wonder why

When I was running the photo-lab, I never had any problems with the SD
cards in readers. The only problems I had was idiots putting XD cards in
the SD card readers.
