I never had a problem with my CF cards (or microdrives), but that's probably because most of the time I was using a PCMCIA (or CardBus) adapter (with very good alignment enforced before any contact pins were engaged), rather than simply using an external card reader.
SD cards have fewer contacts, and the contacts themselves are far better supported, so they are less likely to have contact problems.
