My experience has been to the contrary. A shepherd may obey commands better, but sled dogs are usually better at thinking for themselves. If the musher calls "gee" the lead dog may ignore the command if he senses danger or bad ice in that direction. Usually, the dog is right. German Shepherds, however, are usually content to "just follow orders," like Colonel Klink.
