John, this is a scan of the negative. And I'm not really blaming the
techs at the lab, they did their best trying to help me get a decent
scan of this image way back when. But like you say, those machines are
not made for manual use.
I don't blame them either.
I do blame Walmart & other chains that host mini-labs for not investing
in training their personnel. If the lab operators were really properly
trained, they could get a good scan even with the limited controls
available.
It's not the lab operators fault that the corporations won't train them
properly. It's the tightwads in management who won't invest in their
employees.
They'll waste a dollar trying to cut costs a dime.
