By the way ... is b/w 35mm more forgiving than color when printing
enlargements, or are you still pretty much limited to around 8 x 10
before the grain starts to get obtrusive? And how much difference can I
expect out of professional grade over standard consumer grade films?
Not a lot really. Film emulsion changes as it ages.
Consumer film is made to age gracefully under the assumption that it
won't get used real soon so it gradually reaches peak performance while
sitting in the warehouse or on the vendor's shelf.
Professional film is designed to be at peak performance *RIGHT NOW*.
Keeping it refrigerated keeps it at its peak.
