Bob, Thank you for the explanation of my picture. I will be sure to avoid photographing in that situation again now that I have been informed. I am relieved to know that the fault lay with my mind and not with my lens. I am also glad to know that I did not damage the lens by subjecting it to what I believed to be harsh conditions (although I did buy a cheap UV filter today to protect it just in case). You all have been really helpful in my photographic journey (except for the enabling part, I don't know how many lenses I bought by simply lurking and reading recommendations - my wallet is still hurting from that, but my eyes don't mind when they see the quality of the images).
