from what I've seen so far, the man competitors are drupal, joomla,

i'd recommend Drupal for its overall flexibility and security, and the
fact that it has the most thriving Open Source community; it isn't the
easiest to maintain, though Drupal 7 (currently in RC2 release) improves
it quite a bit, and Drupal Gardens is a free service that will host and
maintain your site, and it lets export it later if you want to host it
and maintain it yourself, or upgrade to a paid version ($20/month) to
get rid of ads and get more support

there are quite a lot of free Drupal themes (Drupal Gardens offers a
more limited selection) , some of which are quite good, but if you want
a "professional" design, i'd recommend Top Notch Themes:

my bias: i develop Drupal sites, i know WordPress & Joomla mainly by
reputation, and don't know Typo3 at all; i used to work with a firm that
did Drupal support for Top Notch Themes
