Are you talking hydroplanning?
No. Going forward dead slow - in granny gear (1st-low). Placarded MAX SPEED =
5mph.
Water crossing the highway above a culvert. There was about a 20 foot long section of
roadway under water only about 4" - 6" deep, not deep enough to cover the
sidewalls up to the rim. Didn't appear to be flowing fast.
I was about 2/3 way across - just about far enough to have the wheels on all
three axles in the water - when all of a sudden the truck just lifts off the
pavement and slews sideways, drifting downstream. Current was from my right to
my left and I ended up at about a 30 deg angle in the on-coming lane, with the
rear end drifting towards the edge when my left front wheel caught traction on
the pavement again.
It's 10 wheels driven in those old 5-tons, with limited slip on every axle.
That front wheel grabbing when it did was all that kept us on the road. Then
both front wheels caught and pulled us on out.
I'll never do it again. I don't care if it's only an inch deep.
I got lucky and stupid didn't kill me that time, so I ain't planning to give it
another chance.
