You don't have to spend 24/7 on facebook and blog and website, but you
do need to put in a little bit of time.
How much time do you spend reading PDML and other websites each day?
Does the help your photography business?
As I noted, I already spend more time on the computer keeping up with
the PDML than I probably should. But I don't do it for "photography
business", I do it for fun.
This is all the social media I want.
Really, once you are all setup, it's a few minutes a day checking on
any posts to your page's wall, and a post every few days to keep your
followers updated.
I apparently didn't make clear just how loathsome I find Facebook. I
don't begrudge "a few minutes a day", I begrudge having anything to do
with it at all. A shit sandwich with lettuce and tomato on whole wheat
bread is still a shit sandwich.
You get out as much as you put in, so a little bit of time is an easy
investment, especially a free service that everyone is on.
I already get out what I put in, and I'm happy with the R.O.I. just the
way it is. ;-D
If you don't want to socialize, don't create a personal account, just
a page for your business.
One thing I did get out of the presentations ... (I was paying attention
and taking notes, even if I didn't care for what I was hearing) ... is
you have to create a personal account before you can have a page for
your business. One thing stressed over and over in the presentations is
you're not really supposed to have a "business" on Facebook, although
those rules are apparently more of a wink and a nod than anything that's
actually enforced.
Most of the presentations were about the many and varied ways to get
around Facebook's anti-commercial activity rules; how to "disguise" your
business use so you won't get kicked off. Mostly it was how to break
Facebook's rules; how to cheat and not get caught.
It wasn't *all* Facebook. There was a bunch of stuff about YouTube and
Google, but it all linked back to Facebook and how use it to improve
your ratings on Google and YouTube. It was about how to "friend" people
for your own profit. Nothing about really being friendly, just how to
"friend" someone so you can use them. It's not so much social
networking, as it is sociopathic networking.
I've had people try to use me. I don't like it. I wouldn't like myself
very much if I became another callous user.
Maybe I'm naive, but I ain't gonna' do it.
