In the case of long glass, it can allow you to get shots that would otherwise be physically impossible. Even with a "blue" vest, you can't stand in the middle of the race track to get that close up shot of a car going by at a hundred miles an hour with a 12-24 lens. Well, I guess you could, but your healthcare provider wouldn't suggest it.
