Thought I'd pass this along to see what the collective opinion is...
I don't have a dedicated film scanner and probably never will, but I
found a CanoScan 8000F (2400 x 4800 dpi) at a thrift store over the
lunch break today that I decided to take a chance on for $12.99.
: )
It has the big thick lid with backlight for film scanning. It came
with power supply and everything, but not the film guides (or
software). Software shouldn't be much of a problem to procure, but I
need to rig something for a film holder (guide). Found this simple

For the little bit it takes to try, I'm going to give it a go. Just
wondered if anyone had any other ideas for DIY film holders to use
with this scanner.
Don't have any info on the scanner, but you could make the film holders
out of mat board & gaffer's tape.
Black masking tape would probably work too. I like gaffer's tape because
it's a little thicker.
Get the kind of black mat board that's black all the way through, and
cut out a slot for the film and then cut the outside edge of the mat
board to fit the opening for the film holder. Cut the slot in the mat
board neatly to keep from having visibly rough edges in the scans.
I'd stretch a tight piece of nylon thread across the slot where the
space between the film frames will be located to help support the film.
Use a needle to thread through the mat board and a drop of super-glue
will anchor it.
Once you've got the slot and the thread supports, build a frame with a
couple of layers of masking tape to keep the film from moving.
You can make a two layer holder with a top layer the lid will squash
down on the film to help secure it.
