Yes my experience is similar. I had a M50/1.4 that seemed to have a massive focus shift at 1.4, but was reasonably sharp from f2.0 on. The current one is about what I would expect from a 1.4, soft in the corners. I have a 1.7 that is pretty sharp at 1.7. As far as I can see there is no difference in build quality between the M1.4 and the M1.7. I kind of feel that Pentax 50/1.4 lenses are a bit over rated.
