Here: http://shakespeare.mit.edu/othello/othello.4.2.html, roughly at 1/3rd of the page I find the following text:


DESDEMONA

    O, heaven forgive us!

OTHELLO

    I cry you mercy, then:
    I took you for that cunning whore of Venice
    That married with Othello.

    Raising his voice

The last sentence is in italics and as you say is stage directions. I will need to be explained, Bob, how "raising his voice" is different from from "smiling".
