Although without any indicators in the foreground or background, how can one tell whether the camera is front focusing or back focusing? With a chart that is at 45 degrees to the camera, you have a scale to work with. And as long as the chart has a good target in the center and the camera is set to single-point autofocus, I don't see what can go wrong. The clock can show that you're not achieving good focus, but it can't tell you which way to go with the adjustment.
It doesn't matter. If you need to adjust focus, you either need to go + or - from zero, so right off the start, do an exposure at +5 and one at -5. One or the other will be better, so now you know which way to continue adjusting. My way probably takes more steps, since I am doing ring arounds, but with the camera tethered, it's pretty quick.
