But, again, only when I have the phone on. That's why it takes a measurable amount of time to get service (and even to find out what provider serves your area) at initial power on. When I turn the phone off, none of that communication is necessary. Note that I mean "powered down" as much as possible; I don't mean simply having hung up the phone so no calls are active.
