To leagally work in the US you /must/ have an SS number or equivelent.
If the illegal employee has presented a valid SS number that's identity
theft to start. As far as I know the employers aren't required to do
any more than report that they saw the proper ID and make copies of the
documents for the employee file.
The problem isn't unrestricted immigration, it's unrestricted
immigration and a welfare state, You can have one, or the other, You
cannot have both, at least not for long.

persecuting them while letting the employers walk away without so much
as a slap on the wrist.
Make the boss liable for his actions. If the worker is going to be
deported for working here illegally, deport the boss who gave him the
job too.
And if he's working for a corporation, deport the CEO & the board of
directors.
