What I want to do is use them to create positives as the first step in prototyping to create a casting/blowing mould or, eventually, a model that can go into an digital mill to produce the part from billet, for example. I've haven't paid much attention in several years, but there used to be (hobbyist level) economical 3D scanners that could capture the surface geometry of 3D objects. I've just got too many irons in the fire to really mess with it right now.
