I think of it as a storm photo - not a boat photo... The boats as they are look vulnerable and I think are fine where they are...
and I agree that the judge sounds pretty dumb

I think that judge was a fool.  Unless you're in the water or way up in the 
air, the mast will cross the horizon.  Boats are beautiful things to photograph 
anyway.

Nice moodiness Rick and the rendering is excellent for the
subject.

I once entered a picture of a boat in a competition and the
judge said
"I don't like boat pictures. There's always a mast cut in
half by the
horizon". Forgetting the fact that judges shouldn't express
likes and
dislikes, when I see this one, I see his point a little.
Maybe if
you'd been able to get the masts more off-centre?
