D-Range "on" does help..some.

as i recall, D-Range, on my K200d at least, matters only when shooting JPEG

having a camera with wider dynamic range can help, of course, since a proper exposure can capture more of the scene

(here in Denver we get great sunsets, but the sun itself is generally behind a mountain range so it's a matter of things coming together so the sun illuminates the underside of the clouds and perhaps some crepuscular rays streaming out between the peaks)
