Saying that the K20's AF and AE are _unusable_ is *way* overstating the
case. *I* use and rely on them. Yes, AF can be annoyingly slow, especially

K10 and *istD models are.
Slow can mean unusable, depending on what you're shooting. My K10D AF
is nearly unusable for birds in flight and dog agility, both of which
are important subjects for me. Given that Larry shoots a lot of moving
subjects in low light (e.g. dancers), I could believe that it's often
unusable for him.
True. But my complaint was with his presenting a subjective finding
("it's slow for my work") as an objective fact ("it's unusably slow"). I
guess we're all guilty of that occasionally on the PDML. :)
I agree that Pentax AF is often too slow for birds in flight and action
(sports, dancers). That has influenced me in what I attempt to shoot.
But I've also learned to compensate. I've shot plenty of dogs, dancers,
singers and musicians, all in motion. I've used AF-C and MF, as well as
wide-angle and smaller aperture (for deeper DoF) at various times for
these situations.
I'd be curious to hear how well the other systems (Nikon, Canon, Sony,
Oly et al) do with AF in the extremely low light that Larry shoots in.
And even if they manage to catch focus fast enough, the resulting image
would be so noisy I'm sure he'd have complaints about that.
I don't think the kit yet exists that gives crystal clear, noise-free
images, with snappy AF to catch moving subjects, in a dark hall lit only
by a few gelled spots. Maybe after this obsession with teensy
interchangeable lens cameras wanes, this "Dark Dance Hall" category will
finally be properly addressed.
