I doubt if we'll see anything in that range. But there might conceivably
be a market for a slightly shorter zoom (such as a 150-400 or thereabouts),
or even just a repackaging of the FA* 250-600 optics in a sealed housing,
with SDM focussing motors.  But that would be expensive - I don't know
if they'd ever sell enough of them to recover the manufacturing design
and setup costs.

It's probably cheaper to buy a four thirds camera and a 100-400 lens
than whatever Pentax would charge for this. And if you're carrying
around that much weight, an extra small camera body isn't significant.

At present, though, there doesn't seem to be a 4/3 100-400 :-(
Olympus have a 90-250/f2.8 (!!) for $5500 or so, and Sigma offer
a 300-800/f5.6 for $8000.  I'd bet that a DA* 250-500 or 250-600
would probably cost even more than that.

A DA* 400/f5.6 shouldn't be too hard to get to market at a vaguely
affordable price point.
