I'd try a third option: convert to b&w, then use split-toning. In LR3 try: for shadows add in 25% of a yellow-green, like 85-90 on the hue slider, but don't modify the highlights.

I think that plain b&w is too bleak. The colour rendition is nice and warm, but reveals too much background detail/clutter.
