I like the shot conceptually, too..
Elements has a pulldown window for brightness and contrast, and a button for "shadows and highlights' with a sliding scale for degree of same... I use it a lot in this kind of situation - sometimes it needs too much and the result is to noisy but other times it works great..
and I'm using old version 5. surely there msut be something comarable in
fancier photoshop versions.

Lightroom has fill, and restore sliders, also all sorts of fancy tone curve adjustments, not to mention an adjustment brush that is like dodging and burning but can also do all sorts of other tweaks. The problem with the adjustment brush is the difficulty in getting it just right on the subject edges.

It's kind of funny, on my hike out, I noticed it and took a couple of quick snaps because I liked the way the patch of sunlight hit it, but didn't think of it as all that special of a shot at the time. It wasn't until I saw it on the monitor that I realized that it might be a better photo than I thought it would be.

Fortunately, it's very easy to get to, so I can head back sometime with a tripod, and some time to devote to taking the shot.

Worth working on a bit, I think... funny shot worth going back for..
 - but if you can't find it again with that trail marker... welll....

No problem, I can put the GPS data into my computer, or my phone, and find it that way.

I was noticing how many things I noticed on the hike out that I didn't see on the hike in. A bunch of other people in the group also noticed these trees on the way out, but they didn't register with them on the hike in.
