You are right. The hoods do take a lot of room. When I can find a good rubber collapsible hood for my wideangle lenses, I usually buy one and test it to see if it will work OK. If it does, I use it. If it doesn't, I find room for the original hood. Sometimes, third party hoods can be pretty good. Nikon makes a lot of hoods that work well with Pentax lenses, and vice versa.
