Thanks for all the good info...
I'm going to sell it, of course - (quickly,I hope, or I might not be able to:-) )

I put pictures on my web page

Lovely camera, the FE came out in about 1977-78 IIRC and replaced the
Nikkormat EL model. I had one when bought a year old and later traded
it for the new FE2 model when they came out in 1982. They worked with
the MD-11 and MD-12 motor drives (I had both, over the years). Solid,
tough, excellent bodies. That 50/1.8 is a good lens, depending on the
specifics it could be the pro-grade or consumer grade model but the
optics in either were good.

The port on the base with the electrical contacts is where the motor
drives interfaced with the camera. It was never designed to have a
cap, as I remember.

The Nikon FE and FM cameras had a long lifespan in production. FMs
were the mechanical, match needle bodies, FEs were the electronic
shutter bodies with auto-exposure. They went FM-FM2-FM2n, FE-FE2, then
both lines merged in the 1990s with them FM2a model which had a hybrid
electronic/mechanical shutter and combined the best features of both.
The FM3a was introduced in 2001 and sold until 2003-2004.

A pair of FMs and the FE2, along with my F3/T hp, were my primary SLR
cameras from 1981 to 2002 when I decided it was time to start the move
to digital cameras. The Nikkor AI-S series lenses are still the
baseline that I measure all SLR lenses by.

$25? Sheesh, that's a steal.

Nikon FE with 50mm f1.8 lens... for $24.99. The batteries had died
so the sal ARmy thought the camera was broken because the dial was set
to something other than M90 and the shutter button and winder didn't move.

Truth be told, I didn't realize that either - though I should have...
took it to Photo tech, got batteries - it seems lovely - nice and clean
something to sell on ebay - but - and I feel silly asking this - I don't
know how to open the damn thing.

Also where was that place you could go on line and type in the
model number to make sure it isn't something someone lost or
is stolen? Usually that isn't a problem with Sal ARmy stuff..
This looks like someone donated something of a deceased relative.

The number is FE 3441569.

thanks
